Abstract

Context The NWLS consists of doctors and dentists at all stages of training. There are three reginal sub-committees:

Greater Manchester,

Cheshire & Merseyside and

Lancashire & Cumbria.

This submission is by members of the Greater Manchester sub-comittee.

Each sub-committee aims to arrange two virtual events each during the year. The three sub-committees collaborate to create a full-day leadership event.

Issue/Challenge We are aware of the varying opportunities for leadership development in different training posts.

Our committee aims to support leadership development of trainee doctors and dentists within the North West by organising a series of events throughout the year. The Greater Manchester Committee have organised two virtual events and all three committees arranged a face-to-face event in July. The events aim to promote leadership amongst trainees and act as a platform for local leaders to showcase their work.

Assessment of issue and analysis of its causes

All trainees in the North West were informed of the events in advance, by email from Health Education England. Interested candidates could register via an email link.

Impact Feedback from each event was collected.

Feedback from the face-to-face, full day event had 60 responses. 84% rated the workshops as ‘very good’ or excellent’. 75% of delegates attended for the advertised content and speakers. 50% attended as they saw it as a network opportunity.

Feedback from the virtual event ‘Under Pressure’ in January had 62 responses. 100% of attendees reported that the event helped to fulfil leadership requirements. Candidates reported feeling more confident (37% strongly agree, 63% somewhat agree) in their leadership approach and 76% felt they would like to start a leadership project following the event.

Feedback from the virtual event ‘Local Leaders’ in March had 62 respondents. 97% of attendees reported that the event helped to fulfil leadership requirements. 90% of candidates reported feeling more confident (34% strongly agree, 56% somewhat agree) in their leadership approach and 87% felt they would like to start a leadership project following the event.

Intervention Our events have helped candidates to become more confident in their own leadership approach and have encouraged them to start their own leadership projects. The events have also been a great opportunity for networking.

These leadership opportunities could be reproduced in other regions or even at a National Level.

Involvement of stakeholders, such as patients, carers or family members:

Patients were not directly involved in the events held but are expected to benefit from improved leadership and management skills amongst the medical profession. We did however include a range of emergency service professionals such as paramedics and firefighters so that we could reflect on our similarities and differences between the professions when coping under pressure.

Key Messages The NWLS events are helping to promote leadership opportunities, and are encouraging trainees to start their own leadership journeys. We propose that our model can be utilised in other Deaneries within the UK, in order to promote excellence in leadership education.

Lessons learnt We are hoping to recruit new members to the committee each year to replace existing members leaving but also to bring new ideas to the table. Going forward, we feel a mix of virtual and face to face events work well. We may however try to give more notice of events so even more candidates can attend.

Measurement of improvement Feedback from the events were collected by emailing a link to an evaluation form to attendees. Feedback was anonymised.

Strategy for improvement To continue promoting leadership development of trainees in the North West, the NWLS will continue to host events in the region in the coming year.
