Abstract

With mounting pressure on the National Health Service to adapt to evolving demands, there is increasing emphasis on clinicians to engage with leadership roles in future healthcare provision. Despite this, we found a lack of junior exposure and participation in management and leadership training and projects.

Only 33% of final year students and foundation year doctors surveyed had received any formal training as undergraduates.

Trainee clinicians remain ill equipped to tackle the challenges facing the profession as emerging leaders in both the clinical and management sphere. Medical schools and Foundation Trusts have a responsibility to deliver training and provide opportunities that promote progression into leadership positions, and facilitate juniors to participate in and initiate projects that improve clinical practice and patient care.

This poster summarises evidence and then suggests local and national level interventions to raise awareness and knowledge amongst trainees in order to encourage future involvement in physician leadership.
