As both Chair Elect of the FMLM and representative of the Medical Royal Colleges, I am delighted to hear that FMLM has been shortlisted for an international Thinkers 50 Distinguished Achievement Award for putting ideas into practice.

I qualified 40 years ago this year. Back then it was fashionable to hear those who should have known better declaring, ‘we all learn from our mistakes’. Most of us carry the scars and guilt associated with the knowledge that there were times when those mistakes really affected our patients. As professionals we have come to realise it doesn’t have to be like that. The service, however, has been slow to adapt to the leadership and organisational changes necessary. The whole ethos of medical education and practice has been to develop an environment where we learn from others mistakes so that they are not repeated, so the perpetrator and the recipient don’t have to suffer.
